minimize email subscriptions

Dear Email Subscriptions…we have a problem and need to chat. I like you, but I’m in a major mood to minimize unnecessary items in my life. Guess what? You didn’t make the cut! I need to reduce how frequent you’re visiting because you’re overwhelming my life, consuming my money, and just adding “stuff”. I need to remove the temptation you provide on a daily basis. Let’s prioritize, mmmkkk?

So, what’s a girl to do?The easiest thing you can do to minimize “things” in your life is to remove the temptation. Let’s tackle a task most of us just ignore – email subscriptions. I’m not going to lie…it was difficult for me to say goodbye to those wonderful potential promotions. So, how did I act on it?

I organized my email subscriptions into three categories:

If you haven’t shopped at one of your email subscriptions in over 6 months, unsubscribe immediately. For me, I never shop at J. Crew, Jane.com, Fabletics, or Costal.com. I was tempted to start shopping at those stores , so I signed up for their email newsletters to stay on top of promotions. However, in reality, I never acted on it. I’m committed on not needing more “stuff” so…Buh-bye!

So, what do you do if you shop at those stores, but rarely? Get rid of those too. Do you really need daily, or weekly emails for items that you rarely buy for? The simple answer: No. If you really can’t say no, set-up a folder in your email account and every time you want to delete it, put the email in that folder. Once a month, revisit that folder and see how often you were tempted to delete that email.

Finally, keep the email subscriptions to companies that you want to stay informed with on a more frequent basis.  For me, Southwest, JetBlue, and United Mileage emails stayed, but I changed the frequency. I only want to know once a week about promotions and discounts on flights.

Overall, really take a look at what is important to you! For me, I really wanted to minimize the temptation. After implementing the folder trick, I realized I was spending precious minutes deleting unwanted email and I don’t know about you, but I could use those few extra minutes! They add up!

If you really want to stay on top of promotions and deals, follow via social media. If you don’t want to bombard your personal social media account, open a new one just for promotional offers. However, keep in mind that the same rules above apply. Only give your precious time to products and companies that matter to you.
